Mexicali Mudra Mondays: Kubera Mudra
We’re making March a month of mindfulness and we want you to join us!
When we can pay for our morning coffee by simply waving our phones or order anything we want on the web from all over the world, shopping can start to feel “less real.” At Mexicali Blues, we want every one of our shopping experiences to be as sensory, soulful and satisfying as a walk through one of our stores. We think mindfulness can help. Why? Because being aware of what’s happening in your head is the key to being happy with what you buy.
We think of shopping as practical, but it is almost always emotional. Buying something new is an automatic mood boost. “Retail therapy” isn’t a joke—a new purchase actually activates endorphins in the brain and speeds up your heart rate with excitement. But if a purchase was not made mindfully, regrets can set in swiftly. When you can’t find any more space in your closet, or when the credit card statement arrives, or when something you bought doesn’t hold up …. suddenly, the magic is gone.
Before you hit the “buy” button or swipe your card at checkout, stop and spend a moment on being mindful of your means and your motivations. Take a few deep breaths and ask yourself a few honest questions:
Why do I want it?
Are you bored, angry, sad, or nervous? All of these emotions can influence your ‘impulse buy’ buttons. If you know you’re a typically emotional shopper, try calling a friend, taking a walk, or slowing down and making a cup of tea before you make that choice. Being mindful of the real reasons we want something make it more likely that we will get it.
Another tactic for making mindful purchases is to make a wish list, which we think are an awesome way to create a moment of mindfulness for new purchases. Creating your personal wish list lets us make thoughtful choices, evaluate our options, and stick to our budget. And a Mexicali Blues wish list can also make wishes come true! We still surprise unsuspecting customers with free gifts from their wish list when the mood strikes us, so click here to start creating your own.
Do I need it?
We all love the feeling of buying something new. But here’s the thing about things—too many personal possessions can increase personal stress. It can also stress our planet. Producing new goods can tax our natural resources and disposing of old goods overflows landfills and pollute our environment. America represents 5% of the world’s population … and produces 30% of the world’s waste. If we all practiced a little more mindfulness about our consumption we could have an enormous impact on the world.
Before you buy something new, make sure you truly need it. If you are replacing something that has broken, see if it can be fixed. Recycle or upcycle whenever you can and prioritize products that were made ethically from sustainable materials. We stock our shelves and closets with clothing made from renewable materials like hemp and recycled materials like plastic, and we use solar energy to power our stores and headquarters.
Is it worth it?
The price is always right there on the tag or the screen, but mindfulness means asking questions about value. Is it authentic and well made? Will it work? Will it last? When we are mindful of how the things we buy are made, shipped and sold, we get better value and we use our buying power to reinforce our values. This extends beyond our customers, to how we source our goods. Mexicali Blues is committed to transparent and responsible sourcing for all our products. We are a firm believer that shopping is much more fun when prices are fair, and Pete and Kim Erskine are mindful shoppers in markets, workshops, galleries and stores all over the world.
Now, go get it!
If, after your mindfulness moment, you still want to make that awesome purchase, go for it. Being honest about our motivations can temper our expectations about our purchases and make even a crazy, compulsive impulse buy worthwhile. Whether you are on our website, in one of our gorgeous, groovy stores, or shopping somewhere else, we hope you are having a meaningful (and magical) shopping experience!
“This is the place where one truly begins to live life fully, knowing that expansion is endless. It is the Heart Chakra that burst’s forth with love and compassion and a genuine authentic call to Being as one walks in the steps of humanity. There is no turning back nor dipping in and out of when the Heart Chakra is opened, it is here, where all is accepted without resistance and abundant love and compassion comes gushing forth!”
Mexicali Blues loves music, and we’re pairing up with Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion to share the love with YOU!
We’ll be giving away tickets to the hottest concerts this spring & summer at the coolest outdoor venues in Maine. This week, we’re sharing 5 pairs of tickets to see Dark Star Orchestra on Sunday August 6th at the Maine State Pier in Portland, Maine! What Grateful Dead show or set would you most like to see them play this summer?

We’re focusing on mindfulness this month at Mexicali, and exploring the practice of meditation in both stillness and motion. Throughout March, we’ll be exploring different mudras (sacred hand positions) to imbue meditative practices with a specific energy. Mudras help to guide the flow of energy (as well as reflex reactions in the brain) in ways that support your meditative manifestation, an outward reflection of inner intention.
“Dharmachakra” in Sanskrit means “wheel of Dharma”, and this mudra represents Buddha’s first sermon given after reaching enlightenment, when he set in motion the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma.
How to do this mudra: Bring the tips of the thumb and index fingers of both hands together to form a circle. Keep the remaining three fingers stretched. Place the hands at heart level with the left palm facing the heart and right palm facing outward.
The left hand facing the body represents the inner world, while the right represents the physical world. The circle represents the union of method and wisdom. The three straight fingers on the left hand represent the “jewels” of Buddhism: Buddha, dharma, and sangha. The three extended fingers on the right hand represent three vehicles of the Buddha’s teaching (‘hearers’ of the teachings, ‘solitary realizers’, and Mahayana or ‘Great Vehicle’). The hands when doing this mudra are always held in front of the heart, symbolizing that these teachings come straight from Buddha’s heart.

It’s a Full Moon in Virgo! Virgo is symbolized by the virgin, but that does not mean her energy is innocent or weak. She is the divine feminine: whole in herself and beholden to no outside source, her energy at its highest vibration is that of strength and inner dynamism. This Virgo moon invites you to step up and claim your personal power, letting go of self-pity or feeling victimized by setbacks. This is the time to find your inner strength, so you can reflect on, nourish, and heal what needs healing. We so easily come to believe that we need other people to save us, but now is the time to recognize your own responsibility—and capability!—in managing your life.
Efficient Virgo tells us that we need to deal with the details in a logical, orderly manner if we want to achieve our dreams (illuminated now by the Sun in Pisces), and this moon will light the way. We will be supported right now in integrating new mental states and habits that have been chosen through mindful analysis, rather than just melting into whatever feels easiest. Look for the ways you might be reinforcing self-worth in a negative way. Pay attention to what is proving particularly vexing in your life right now. Where are you getting irritated or feeling frustrated? These areas are the ones that likely need some reframing and healing. Because we are subtly being directed to focus on where we need to claim our own power, we might be feeling particularly sensitive, hurt, or disgruntled at the ways/times others aren’t showing up for us when we feel they should. Everyone is on their own trip to engage with their personal capacities today, so try not to take it personally. If you can, use these moments as opportunities to think of how you can better show up for yourself. <3

The translation of “Anjali mudra” from Sanskrit shows us that anjali means “to offer” or “to salute”, while mudra means “seal.” Anjali mudra is indeed often used to both salute and seal a moment or a practice: we use it as a way to return to one’s heart center or to greet a person, often while saying “namaste,” or before or after a yoga practice. Another way to think of this mudra is that it symbolizes us honoring and celebrating the moment, from the heart.
How to do this mudra: Place palm against palm firmly against each other with your thumbs pressing into your sternum.
Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (known as “the father of modern yoga”) offers us this insight into the Anjali mudra:
“This gesture signifies the potential for an intention to progress to greatest spiritual awakening. When done properly the palms are not flat against each other; the knuckles at the base of the fingers are bent a little, creating space between the palms and fingers of the two hands resembling a flower yet to open, symbolizing the opening of our hearts.”

In January, the Mexicali Tribe focused on renewal. In February, we concentrated on community. Now, rejuvenated and reconnected, we are making March a month of mindfulness, and we want you to join us.
At Mexicali Blues, we think of mindfulness as being wholly in the present moment and accepting the sensations and emotions that moment presents us with. This means setting aside regrets about the past, anxieties about the future and the distractions all around us to experience what is happening right now. Not judging, not reacting, simply observing … and being.
Why? Because mindfulness can make wonderful things happen in our brains and our bodies! A daily dose of mindfulness helps us process emotions, solve problems and relieve stress. It sharpens focus, promotes better relationships and boosts self-esteem and self-awareness. For many of us, meditation brings us to that mindful place, but creating a mindful moment can be as simple as turning off your phone while you are having coffee with a friend to concentrate on the conversation or turning off the radio during your morning commute to be alone with your thoughts.
As we move through the magical month of March, join us as we carve out a space of quiet and clarity in our daily routine to be present for:
What do you want to be sure you don’t miss a moment of this March? You can find easy instructions for practicing mindfulness on Mindfulness.org, and we’ll be sharing other ways to practice mindfulness in the days ahead!
The U.S. National Toboggan Championships have been going on at the Camden Snow Bowl since 1936, with traditional wooden toboggan sleds racing down a 400-foot-long wooden chute (with some zooming at close to 40 mph!), ending the ride on frozen Hosmer Pond. It’s an awesomely fun community event, and teams show off their creativity as well as their racing skills by designing their own speedy sleds and rocking crazy costumes.
This year, we sponsored a sled piloted by Mexicali pals called the “Mexicali Tribe” team. Mexicali co-owner Pete has been off traveling in search of new Mex magic for spring, but he was the honorary 5th member of the team, with a laminated pic of his happy face taped to the front of the sled. The team rocked tie dye pants that they made using our own Mexicali DIY tie dye kit and white Thai fisherman pants. They also made Pete a pair that they used as a flag at their ‘campsite’. It was a magnificently merry day, and the Tribe finished 61st out of 146, with a top time of 9.51 seconds! Winter in Maine is no joke, but we sure know how to make the best of it!
It’s a New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Pisces! Solar Eclipses are all about new beginnings, and if you’ve had anything percolating OR coming to a close since the last Lunar Eclipse on February 11th, now is the time to either embrace or fully let go of whatever or whoever has been on your mind. Whatever emotions have been stirred are ready to shift now, so accepting and flowing with whatever has happened is the best thing for your being at this time. This eclipse will bring a wave of new energy that will help you to look and move forward in alignment with your highest self. There’s been a lot of emotion and tumult brewing and churning around many of us, but don’t lose sight of envisioning who and where you want to be. Hold fast to your dreams of a better future, and this Piscean tidal wave will help to take you in that direction! Pisces energy is all about reflection, intuition, and your higher consciousness. Pay attention to your dreams and make art of any and all kinds to find the answers or direction that you seek. <3
